Doctors at loss to explain Garrett collapse
November 27, 2004 - 4:34PM
Doctors today ran several tests on Labor MP Peter Garrett but still did not
know what caused him to collapse on a Sydney beach this morning.
Mr Garrett, the newly elected MP for the safe Labor seat of Kingsford Smith,
started feeling faint and collapsed at the water's edge after his usual
morning swim at Maroubra Beach today.
An ambulance was called and Mr Garrett was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital
at Randwick, where he was in a stable condition.
A spokesman for the hospital said doctors had performed several medical
tests on Mr Garrett, the details of which he could not reveal.
"He's fine, they just can't figure out what happened to him," the spokesman
"They've been running tests all day."
Mr Garrett was not in any pain and he was expected to be released after 6pm,
he said.
Mr Garrett's adviser said Labor's star recruit was a fit and healthy
51-year-old with no history of medical problems.
Mr Garrett, the former frontman for rock band Midnight Oil, was elected to
Federal Parliament on October 9.
