Last time I saw the Oils...a year ago on July 4th...sniff sniff...Bones was
amazing. To me he seemed to be the strongest leader in the band musically.
I mean of course the rest of the guys are truly amazing, but when it came to
holding down the beat and rhythm Bones was the guy. Of course Rob is truly
one amazing drummer...the best drummer ever IMO, but having a good bass
player in a band is essential. That's why I think that Midnight Oil could
not be Midnight Oil if any one of the current members had left. I wasn't
alive when Giffo and Andrew James played for the Oils so maybe this isn't a
fair assessment, but seeing that Bones was with the Oils for the longest
amount of time, I think he really became an essential to the band. Martin
and Jim are amazing guitar players, Rob is an amazing drummer, Pete an
amazing front man, but you also need an amazing bass player to hold all of
the rest together and Bones definitely did just that.

I don't quite understand it when people say that even if Bones had left, it
wouldn't be Midnight Oil anymore.
Bones is great. But he's also the band's 3rd bassist, and was with the band
for only the latter half of their career. Surely it was Midnight Oil before
Bones. Surely D&D was Midnight Oil, and Red Sails was Midnight Oil. And
for that matter, it was Midnight Oil before Giffo.
Again, nothing wrong with the man, but the Oils came into their own without
him, and could still be the Oils without him.
