Of course, that is not to forget the many wonderful sports played predominantly by women... who have been disproportionately way more sucessful at the international level (none of this crappy interstate stuff only played by commonwealth countries) than the men ever were. The stat I saw only went to the Atlanta Games, but over the history of the Olympic games women have been only 20% of the sportspeople in the team, but have won over 40% of the medals for australia (thinks of the womens hockey team as a team who are that much better than the men, but still have to go starkers to get sponsorship - wouldn't happen to a mens team - mind you, who would want to see shane warne starkers....?)
However, the 3-1 drubbing of England in the (mens) soccer suggests that the lads might finally be able to get somewhere in the only truely international football code (it lead to the headline: "Another 11 convicts discovered - the english football team" from an english newspaper).
If you reeeeaaaaaalllllllly must follow the footy, then your teams will be:
newcastle knights (rugby league)
ACT brumbys (rugby union) and
c o l l i n g w o o d (AFL)
As for refugees, I've yet to hear how John Howard is going to handle the numbers of refugees that are going to come from iraq once they start bombing the crap out of it. Perhaps they will only be allowed in if they can play cricket.
