I have never experienced "holes" in cd:s. Sure, my cd player sometimes
jumps and skips bits, but I've never heard any silent gaps (is that what
a "hole" should sound like?). I'm still using the same cd player as I
bought back in 1991(!) - and an even older stereo equipment - so the
playing problems I have today is rather because of the player than the
discs. Fact is, I have often more problems with playing *brand new*
discs in my player! The skippings and "fast advances" happen somewhere
in the first three tracks or so, the second half of a cd is never any
problem though...
And yes, I AM contemplating buying a new stereo soon! (If only I could
get a job - which means money...)
I had no idea that black cd-r discs were made of vinyl! I once used a
package of black Memorex cd-r. Can't say if the quality got any better,
but I like *look* of those discs! The black surface is really beautiful.

( Very) Unfortunately...yes. Actually 1st noticed this aluminum
coating oxidation back in 1995...a Dire Straits--Brothers In Arms
(original release..1986) had developed those "holes" in it. All was
fine until about 2 minutes into track 5 then the play would stop,
requiring a "fast advance" through the next 2 minutes or so to continue
playback...
