Garrett opens red centre recording studio
Former Midnight Oil front man Peter Garrett has opened a recording studio
at Papunya north-west of Alice Springs.
About 200 people from surrounding communities have gathered for the opening.
Peter Garrett, the Warumpi band and local Aboriginal bands will play a
concert at Papunya tonight.
The community is one of the worst affected by petrol sniffing in central
Australia and it is hoped the studio will play a important part in reducing
substance abuse.
Inside the studio is a mural depicting the communities favourite artists
such as TuPac, Elvis Presley and Britney Spears.
It is the brainchild of Warumpi band member Sammy Butcher who says it also
can be used to record dreamings and stories from the communities elders.
