Look, people, if you want to dis the U.S. Government, fine. I may not like it
("You're talking 'bout my momma and if I want to insult her, OK, but you best
not talk about her like that!"), but thanks to American ideals as originally
stated, free speech is now considered a human right.
That's our patriotic duty over here, too, although you wouldn't know it to
talk to the Dixie Chicks, Janeane Garofalo, Susan Sarandon or Tim Robbins.
However, this is a site for fans of Midnight Oil, unless I was misinformed
("I came to Casablanca for the waters"). Unless said fans are denser than a
tar pit, they/we know what the Oils are on about and must appreciate their
message. If we didn't agree with the message, at least most of the time, we
wouldn't be here.
Therefore:
WE ARE AWARE OF WHAT THE U.S. GOVERNMENT HAS DONE, AND MUCH OF IT HAS NOT,
REPEAT NOT, BEEN 'IN OUR NAME'.
Good things? Yes, America has also done a lot of good things, which it hasn't
gotten much credit for lately. Smacks of jealousy and an inferiority complex
to me.
Is this gathering really a bunch of reactionary, redneck (ocker, in Oz-speak)
Republican jingoistic warmongers? I didn't think so. I hope not.
But there are those who come here who seem to be going out of their way,
through inflammatory and/or insulting comments (and I personally don't
believe that they don't know English well enough to understand exactly what
they're saying) who are trying to create a sh-tstorm...which is not
necessary, and IMHO, unappreciated. This, of all places, ain't the place.
You want to poke at someone with a stick, try it in person, not cyberspace
(the anonymous parallel universe) and see what happens then.
Meanwhile, while I welcome the freedom of speech and lively exchange of
opinion, I wish we could GET BACK TO THE OILS, even if they no longer exist
as an entity under that name.
Wasn't there supposed to be a political board as an adjunct to this one?
Keep the flames there. Can we please just get on with the business of music,
life and fun here, if you all don't mind.
Back to lurking now...
