I find it interesting that you say "he was listed", as the credits for 'Diesel and Dust' have no names of the musicians at all. (It says songs by "Midnight Oil", but nothing else.) At least the copies I have seen have been that way... Those who bought 'Diesel' as their first Midnight Oil album, which includes hell of a lots of people who haven't bought any Oil album since, sure couldn't find out anything about the band through the inlay! Kind of a secret project like the Ghostwriters' first album.

It took me years to find out for sure that Gifford was the bass player on that album - and that the "man with the beard" in the video for "Beds are burning" is indeed Peter Gifford. I mean, you don't actually see him playing the bass in the video; in the end of it when you see the Oils in silhouttes he just "walks by" the others, without any instrument. Strange.
