I quite like the song as well and have been musing over the "show me to the
back of your hand" line as well.  I hear it as "I'm lost, help me find
myself and my place in this land - you know it like the back of your hand."

I've also been hearing it, as Tom mentioned, as a plea for acceptance.  We
(Or at least I) hold out our palms when we say "no" and turn people away.
The back of the hand is on the inside and means one is past that rejection.
