WACO, Texas (Reuters) - Touring areas in Oregon devastated by
wildfire, President Bush ( news - web sites) on Thursday will
propose easing regulations and environmental reviews to speed the
removal of timber from fire-prone U.S. forests.

>>>> I like the idea. pity we can't do the same in medicine.
something along the lines of "let's remove the liver from alcohol
prone drinkers".

Bush's critics said the move showed contempt for the environment and
would amount to a windfall for the timber industry.

>>>> methinks they are right. it might end up being the right
solution but shouldn't we at least think about for a while?

The White House called it proactive forest management. By reducing
the density of trees, the administration hopes to prevent
devastating wildfires like the one that swept through Squires Peak
near Medford, Oregon.

>>>> this really makes me laugh. forests seem to have managed
themselves rather well before we arrived. some of them actually
achieved modest growth rates. how about some "proactive urban
development"? it's not that I do not have sympathy for the people
affected by these widlfires. I do. but I also have sympathy for the
people in Hurricane Alley. how come we don't hear any "proactive"
talk from the govt. about it. is it because there is nothing to be
done or because no major industry stands to benefit? I get the
feeling that the people of Oregon are being sold short by GWB.
