Sure is biblical. If I can remember it correctly off the top of my head-

When the Israelites left Egypt, they wandered around in the desert for a
while. At one stop, Moses went up on a mountain and received the ten
commandments on stone tablets from God. He was gone a while, the Israelites
got nervous, and thinking him lost decided to revert back to the old gods.
They made a golden idol in the form of a calf and worshipped it. Then God
told Moses what was going on, and Moses, in a rage, smashed the tablets, had
the calf ground up, and made the people drink it.
So the calf has come to symbolize worshipping false (or bad) things,
especially money or materialism.
