Liked the Yoda-esque comment on Pete's mail too!! Got a good laugh that =
someone pointed that out since it was the first thing I thought as well.

As for band introductions, Pete has done them as of late but earlier in =
the band's history he almost never did them. I think it has to do with =
the fact that Australians are a little more private and not trying to =
become household names. I think I remember a interview once where they =
liked portraying a unified front, basically saying "we're Midnight Oil" =
or something to that effect.=20

Anywa, I did hear Pete introduce everyone except himself at 2 or 3 of =
the shows I was just at and I know I had seen him do this a few times in =
96 & 97.

Later,
OILMAN

Thanks for the Avalon/Boston setlist Chris, was too into the show to =
keep track of that sort of thing myself (and didn't get one of the =
printout setlists, or a drumstick for that matter...)

Anyways, here's my take on the night. Will Hoge started off with a =
GREAT set. I'm not always so open to new music, but their stuff kind of =
hit as chord, I guess. The drummer's pained expressions were quickly =
noted, and my friend Joe noticed that he seemed to blink EVERY TIME he =
hit the snare. This led to a big-time blinking workout. :-) Also very =
impressed with Will singing half of "his mother's favorite song" without =
the aid of a mike, since he severed the cable somehow on the previous =
song. We also thought he sang plenty loud enough, even though he made =
admirable attempts to "turn up the volume" when people in the crowd =
yelled for "LOUDER!" Was also nice to meet the band after the show at =
the souvenier stand. We bought 2 of their CDs. Quote of the night from =
Will, "Don't ask if he really wants 2 of the CDs, just take his money! =
Thanks a lot!"

On to the Oils. INCREDIBLE!!! My first show in a standing-room only, =
club-type atmosphere. This is the way Oils are meant to be seen. No =
seats for people to even THINK about sitting in. Were in the second row =
behind a tall girl who didn't seem particularly excited to be there, or =
with Peter's exuberant sweat-flinging. Was glad to see her go before =
the encores so we could move up the rail. Were right in front of Jim, =
his playing was amazing. And all those pedals...wow. Actually saw him =
smile once after sharing a jam with Bones. That was the only time =
however. Must be that concentration thing that doesn't allow for =
amusement.

Bones was interesting, if for no other reason than it was pretty =
evident that one of his main jobs on stage is to STAY THE HELL OUT OF =
PETER'S WAY! A couple of close calls, but no bodily damage was =
incurred. Peter's mic stand did wipe out Rob's and just miss part of =
the drum set, but the roadies were on the job instantly to fix =
everything. Bones' vocals were also an integral part of each song. =
Peter was in rare form with rapid-fire commentaries on everything from =
about how people can combat terrorism by not letting affect their =
everyday lives (and getting out to enjoy the Oils tonight) to Al Gore =
and Prince Charles being "the only world leaders to write books without =
any assistance". And we must not forget the dancing. "Whirling =
dervish" comes to mind. After a show, he must need to do some serious =
rehydrating! Not much to say about Martin, he was WAY over on the left, =
and not really in my line of sight. =20

That reminds me. The music and commentaries were so fast and furious, =
there was never any band member introductions. Not that most people =
there needed any, but usually most bands do one. Have they at any other =
shows, or is that not something they usually do? Oh, and last but =
certainly not least, Rob went off, as expected. The drums for Power And =
The Passion about brought the house down. And where is the pedal for =
his spin-out mike? It seemed to just magically come closer when Rob =
needed it. :-) And the water tank solo, amazing. Gotta love guys who =
can keep a beat whatever may be on hand for hitting.

So all in all, the show was the tops. Certainly hope that when they =
come around in the spring, they stick to venues such as this, and don't =
"graduate" to a seated venue. Nice to finally meet you, Jeff, and sorry =
about not hooking up with the rest of you Workers I saw there. Was just =
a bit too into the show and keeping my space on the floor, I guess. And =
anyone who was thinks that an Oils show would not be complete without =
the "Yobbos", rest assured, they were present and accounted for, giving =
free beer showers. =20

My jealous throughts are with all those who made it to more than one =
show this time around, and good luck to those who seeing the Oils over =
the next fews weeks. Disappointed you will not be. Well, I think this =
wraps up my account of the Avalon/Boston show for now. However, the =
memory of the show will stick in the mind for quite some time, or at =
least until this infernal ringing in my right ear stops. :-)

  Take care,
  Pete
