It's hard to believe it could have been for using the word "shit."  The Who and Stones had albums 15 years earlier (Quadrophenia & Goats Head Soup) with lyrics using the "F" word.
Those did not even have warning stickers on them (of course that may have been before record companies started using them).

Hi All,

Now my computer has cooled down from its overheating email in  box I can offer my humble opinion.

A  few months ago I “dusted” off my vinyl collection and I have an original D&D aussie LP.  Bought it soon after the album was released and had played it heaps before I hit the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney for the 1sy Sydney D&D show.  Definitely NO Gunbarrel Hwy on this LP.  Why I can’t say.  Did read an article on Wikepedia saying it wasn’t on the US album because of the Shit word.

What it does contain though is a decent size MO poster.  One side has 3 photos of MO playing a gig with the classic D&D stage set.  It literally has Holden Wrecks on the stage as well as the customary water tank and stuffed dingo.  Not sure what concert it is from.  Maybe Dead Heart tour of late 1986 or early 1987 gigs before Giffo left the band.  Looks like small venue with crowd up close.  Not sure if this info is on the album sleeve.  Had trouble reading this 27 years ago so I have no chance now.

On the other side of the poster is a chapter from the book STRICT RULES written by Andrew McMILLAN.  This is a book about the BFWF tour.  The chapter is about the scenes which confronted the band as they pulled into the WA town of WARAKURNA.  Fairly graphic and frank description of what they were confronted with.  Warakurna was not on the original itinerary of the BFWF tour.  It was literally only added at the last minute.  Lucky for us because this town inspired Jim to write the song Warakurna.  For me this is MY number 1 MO song.  Most will know this but this is the song which actually contains the lyrics “Diesel and Dust.”

Nice discussion by all.  Shows there are different opinions out there about certain MO topics.  But we have 1 thing in common……..

OILS RULE………………………….

Later,

SK

I love Gunbarrell Highway, and the more Midnight Oil on a disc the better, but to me Sometimes seems like more of an album closer than Gunbarrel Highway.
Didn't they used to close their sets with Sometimes?

I was digitising an Aus Diesel and Dust LP just the other day and got a surprise when it ended without Gunbarrel Highway! It felt ... strange, unnatural, wrong! lol. Sometimes ain't an album closer!

I have not seen an Aus CD without Gunbarrel Highway; and I have the original CD and the CD+DVD release from a few years ago. I'm sure a bigger fan can give the definitive answer on that one, but I think all Aus CD's have Gunbarrel.

Hello, everydoby.  I've got a few questions for the Aussie fans who bought DaD upon its release in the 80s:

Does the Aus version of Diesel and Dust always include Gunbarrel Highway, or is that just on CD?  Did the Aus LPs and Cassettes in the 1980s include it as well?  I presume all the remastered CDs do.  Is that right?

I just lucked into finding a 1980s Aus DaD CD in the used bin at my local record shop here in Canada's Eastern-most city (literally the opposite side of the Earth from Oz), and of course it includes Gunbarrel Highway, which isn't marked as being a bonus track or anything.  But it piqued my curiosity as to what fans in Australia consider to be the true/official "final track" on Diesel and Dust.

Cheers,
Mike
