I remember reading an article that claimed that Gunbarrel was left off the US version due to being a very specific Australian reference that wouldn't mean much to places outside of Australia. I've always thought this claim was ridiculous, ESPECIALLY on an album with a song called WARAKURNA. I mean seriously. It had to have something to do with the use of the word 'shit'.

Side 1 is roughly 22 minutes, Side 2 is again about 22 minutes without Gunbarrel, 26 with it.  So that may have been a factor.

Although that said, Side 1 of Red Sails is 25 minutes, and Side 2 is 27.  (It was quite a while before I ever heard the end of Shipyards of NZ, as my taped cassette copy ran out of tape halfway through it!)

What's the run time on each side of D&D - did GBH not fit...?

It's funny you say that Stu. I've seen people on this list rave about Sometimes being the best album closer ever. I'm with you. To have Sometimes close the album is just plain wrong. Gunbarrel Highway is a classic album closer and one of my favourite Oils songs. I think it's the only real 'repeat to fade' of all the Oils songs. They fade on Koala Sprint and Antrtica but the music is not repeated. It seems fitting that Gunbarrel Highway fades into the distance much like it's namesake.

I was digitising an Aus Diesel and Dust LP just the other day and got a surprise when it ended without Gunbarrel Highway! It felt ... strange, unnatural, wrong! lol. Sometimes ain't an album closer!

I have not seen an Aus CD without Gunbarrel Highway; and I have the original CD and the CD+DVD release from a few years ago. I'm sure a bigger fan can give the definitive answer on that one, but I think all Aus CD's have Gunbarrel.

Stuart

Hello, everydoby.  I've got a few questions for the Aussie fans who bought DaD upon its release in the 80s:

Does the Aus version of Diesel and Dust always include Gunbarrel Highway, or is that just on CD?  Did the Aus LPs and Cassettes in the 1980s include it as well?  I presume all the remastered CDs do.  Is that right?

I just lucked into finding a 1980s Aus DaD CD in the used bin at my local record shop here in Canada's Eastern-most city (literally the opposite side of the Earth from Oz), and of course it includes Gunbarrel Highway, which isn't marked as being a bonus track or anything.  But it piqued my curiosity as to what fans in Australia consider to be the true/official "final track" on Diesel and Dust.

Cheers,
