Midnight Oil

Hah - I knew there'd be a bit of interest from 'workers - though an actual client of the shop I wasn't expecting!

Yes, the credits mentioned it had closed and reopened numerous times - the last reopening being 2005 - so presumably it's still there.

Re the bands - the Undertones were the only ones I had heard of, though to my recollection, I'd never actually heard Teenage kicks..and here I'll be heretical - from what I heard in the film, I don't really like it much (maybe it's a grower?). The song by Rudi however was instantly catchy and I had to restrain myself from pogoing in my seat. A friend owns a copy of Teenage kicks single, but it's on Sire, not the original Good vibes pressing, so it's not quite a collector's item.

Re Feargal Sharkey (or as my brother used to call him, Seagull Sharkbait) - yes the friends I went to the flick with had similar comments re his time in the Undertones vs A good heart.

Cheers,
David

I used to spend a lot of time in Good Vibrations growing up. I bought an LP called Maiden Australia there. It got me into Hunters & Collectors and Split Enz. In it's last closing down sale, I picked up Strict Rules for a couple of quid. I've heard it has since reopened. Again. For the umpteenth time.
A Belfast institution.
As for never hearing the bands....he was responsible for releasing Teenage Kicks, by the Undertones. if you haven't heard that, you don't know music.

Thought some workers might be interested in this

We saw Good vibrations on Friday night - definitely worth a look. It tells the story of Terri Hooley, owner of Good vibrations record store in the heart of Bomb alley in Belfast in the late 70s. He ended up releasing lots of Belfast punk records on his own as the majors wouldn't touch them. The punk scene acted as a bridge between the Unionists and Republicans. Have to admit I'd never heard of him or most of the bands, but the songs really jump out the speakers at you - eg

The bloke who plays Terri Hooley does a great job, and there's good mix of humour and darkness to make for a satisfying film whether you're into the music or not.

Cheers,
David
