It's a very strong tracklist, but still a bit biased towards singles IMO. Mine would look something like this:

Run By Night - Swap for Used and Abused
Cold Cold Change - Swap for Stand In Line
Koala Sprint - Room freed up by ditching Best of Both Worlds below
Back On The Borderline - Keep
Wedding Cake Island - Keep
No Time For Games - Keep
Don't Wanna Be The One - Keep
Armistice Day - Swap for Brave Faces (or for a live version. Album version of Armistice is a bit weak)
Lucky Country - Keep
Only The Strong - Keep, but change to the live version from Oils on the Water
Short Memory - Keep
Read About It - Keep
US Forces - Keep
Power And The Passion - Keep
When The Generals Talk - Keep
Best Of Both Worlds - Scratch. Love the drum part, but my listing needs this space more than the song
Kosciusko - Keep
Progress - Keep
Hercules - Keep

Beds Are Burning - Keep
Put Down That Weapon - Swap for Bullroarer
Dreamworld - Keep
The Dead Heart - Keep
Warakurna - Keep
Blue Sky Mine - Keep
Forgotten Years - Keep
King Of The Mountain - Keep
One Country - Swap for River Runs Red. Personally think this is the most underrated song in the latter-day Oils catalogue. (The most underrated overall being most of Head Injuries)
Truganini - Keep
My Country - Keep (EaSaM and Breathe are both overdue for a remaster, though. Blue Sky's sound has held up better in retrospect)
In The Valley - Keep
Surf's Up Tonight - Bah. Swap it out for Sins of Omission. (I'd actually like to see Barest Degree here, but I doubt it was ever in the running at all, I seem to recall Rob hates it for being a bastard child)
Redneck Wonderland - Keep
White Skin Black Heart - Keep - I would dearly love to put Comfortable Place on the Couch or Blot here, but it would sit oddly after the rest of the record!
Say Your Prayers - Hmm...I'd rather see The Real Thing here, even though it's not their material
Golden Age - Keep
Luritja Way - Swap for World That I See. Not necessarily my first choice to represent Capricornia, but a better closer than Luritja Way IMO.

Seeing through the song selection on Essential Oils I actually think it
is an excellent representation of the band's career! Apart from a few
exception these ARE the essential tracks from each album. Everyone has
their personal faves so I personally would have exchanged:

Powderworks for Wedding Cake Island
Bedlam Bridge for One Country
Cemetery In My Mind for White Skin Black Heart
Too Much Sunshine for Luritja Way

But it certainly serves the purpose to introduce the whole width of the
musical spectrum to newcomers! Who thinks of other "essential" tracks
that are missing or which ones you think not that essential but made it
onto the compilation (keep it to 36 tracks and every studio album/EP
must be represented)?

Cheers,

Stephan
