I would be excited for anything new - remixes, live versions, four track demos, acapella versions, Rihanna / Oil mash-ups, Tom Jones covers, anything, I am starving - but the unexcited completist in me will still demand I make the purchase. Any indication as to whether this will be worldwide? I don't see the usual North American online retailer sites mirroring the JB Hi-Fi site.

Can't say I have any interest in this release, but I'm glad that after the last two efforts, they've finally managed to push out a Best Of album that's actually representative of the breadth in the back-catalogue... (I mean, was 20,000 Watts really missing all of the blue album and Bird Noises? This comes seriously overdue)

ESSENTIAL OILS is the definitive collection of legendary Australian rock band MIDNIGHT OIL.
Handpicked by the band and distilled from their amazing 25 year recording legacy, this two disc set is a chronological history; a road trip through the very best of the band’s 14 studio albums and two groundbreaking EP’s. The package features remastered audio, liner notes by Rolling Stone Magazine Senior Editor, David Fricke and rare images from the Oil’s archive.
Known around the world for their support of peace, environmental issues and social justice, Midnight Oil wrote songs about the issues that mattered to them. They saw the world through uniquely Australian eyes, their music conjuring up the sights and sounds, the heat and expanse of their homeland. No band better exemplifies what it means to be Australian and no Australian band is better known for their dedication to the ideal of a fair go for all. Above all, the Oils were
about making great music and the list of singles and live favourites here is comprehensive. From early tracks such as Cold Cold Change, Back On The Borderline and Armistice Day, to breakthrough Australian hits Power And The Passion and Read About It, to the songs that put them on the world stage; Beds Are Burning, The Dead Heart, Blue Sky Mine and Truganini; the length and breadth of Midnight Oil’s recorded catalogue is staggering.

Here's the notification and some additional news from the Office:
We are announcing the release of 'Essential Oils' - the band's own pick of their musical legacy. It is a collection of 36 tracks (the maximum they could fit on 2CD's) which they have chosen because these songs mean something special to them - through their writing and recording and also through sharing them with their incredible live audience.
The Oils have been hands on in putting this release together and in their choice of artwork. All tracks up to and inc. Blue Sky are remastered on disc for first time, there's a free download of 'Read About It' from Canberra on the website, a T shirt and handy tote bag too. Interviews, (even the odd one with Pete), liners by David Fricke, band musings. It's going to be fun.
You'll all be wondering about Canberra, given there's a remixed track on
the website. Phil McKellar has mixed a
few tracks (not all, just a few the band chose) and there will be a chance to hear them on a special radio doco day of release. That won't be announced for a while - details to follow.
Thanks to all the list for hanging in there through the drought.
We hope you enjoy 'Essential Oils'.
Gtx,
Stephan
