True, true. However, if you listen to later live versions of old songs like best Of Both Worlds and Koala Sprint and others, the classic lead guitar work is all but gone. Maybe they did prefer to stop doing technical guitar work, in favour of a more "textured" approach. But...listen to Martin's "solo" on BOBW at the Sound Relief gig, you'll see what I mean. Don't get me wrong-I love this dude's playing he will always be inspirational to me.

P.s
I noticed Jim sorta took-over the soloing a bit more.

Helps Me Helps You is an awesome solo no doubt. The Nick Launay point is an interesting one (though he did produce Red Sails). To answer my own question, I suppose neither Rotsey or Moginie soloed "like that" anymore because Moginie and Hirst weren't writing songs "like that" anymore. I appreciate there was a considered move from some camps in the eighties to distance oneself from the prog excesses of the 70s, of which extended guitar wankdom had been a tenant, but only the blue album's material really comes even close to that.

Maybe my question is better framed "how complicit was Rotsey with the band's material moving in the direction it did?"

Those are all awesome solos. Again the question that others have noted before..Rotsey's interest in lead playing did seem to diminish. Not that it matters that much to me, they still rocked on ! But, as a guitarist it stands out to me.
Jim.
p.s
Been thinking...when I die, who should I leave all my Oils stuff to? (not that I have alot really)I honestly don't know anyone, that's right ANYONE, who digs them in the way I do. Except for you mob. I might not die for many years yet (I hope) will the powderworkers still be around? Is there younger powderworkers joing the fold? It would be nice to think the Oils can continue to inspire new generations. (Could help that the 80's seemes to have come back in fashion somewhat!)
Live long and prosper,
Jim.

- last 35secs of Blossom & Blood
- outro of Is It Now, in particular the last 17sec fadeout
- Profiteers outro, particularly live
- Koala Sprint
- Best of Both Worlds
- middle solo of Nothing Lost, Nothing Gained (though pretty sure its Mogine)
- Loves on Sale live

Why did Rotsey stop playing like this?

My favourite Oils guitar tone committed to vinyl: Basement Flat 2:12 - 2:17!

The best guitar solo ever. Powderworks? Scream in blue? Eye contact? No time for games? Tone poem? Write about it (200 words):
