Women, and in particular the media, will start trumpeting it's importance based on a principle and not whether or not she is the person best placed to do the job, whereas most men will, well,  probably just get sick of hearing about it!! 

For mine, the people best placed to run the country aren't working in politics and so we just have to deal with whoever gets to the top of the tree (whether it be Branch A or Branch B) out of the people who chose politics as a career path.

And as for all the whinging about Gillard getting to be PM without leading the party at an election, it's hardly unprecedented.  Keating got there the same way.
 
Gillard, however, may also find herself in the record books as a very short-staying PM.
