The technology of cel phones and twitter and facebook, etc. simply is. It can be damn handy at times, but it has its limitations and it can suck just like anything else.
That said, I suspect that the people who set up that facebook monstrosity are too immature or idealistic tounderstand how democracies and governments work. They rant and rave about the powers that be, but then they want their guy to have blanket proclaimation power to set things "right".
It doesn't work that way. There is much hidden structure and collaboration beneath the surface.
I myself toned down the activism some time ago because it was a necessary concession to a job where I have some real power. That meant trading in ranting and raving for a quieter life where I get input on the next generation of environmental regulations and get to sit at banquet tables and discuss things like the futility of nuclear power with people who have some power to direct the energy policy away from such outdated and destructive options. This has forced me to pull back from boards of directors of various environmental activist organizations, while advancing the agenda in other ways. In other words, its been a trade off and not a sell out.
I suspect that Pete has had to grapple with much more intense trade offs. Having power comes with responsibility and with a mandate to work things out with those you would rather not listen to. This is what democracy looks like.

And don't forget everything that occurred with Twitter during the Iranian elections! Social media is no longer only child's play. It has become an amazing way to connect our world and bring about change. I'm speaking as a person that grew up surrounded by these technologies. Rather than dismiss these types of things, we should embrace them and use them for good! I only recenly joined Twitter (a month ago) and it was because I was required to do so for a graduate level course. I thought Twitter was the worst thing ever, but I have been completely convinced otherwise after realizing how much information is out there and how much I can learn from Twitter. As a teacher, I have been blown away by the community of educators on Twitter and how many resources I have gained in this short month. Technology is constantly changing. We don't know what it will bring in a week from now... kind of boggles the mind!

Don't say that. Here in Germany Twitter recently caused an uproar
because presedential election results leaked before the official
announcement and even election prognoses before closing of the polling
