actually dvd shrink makes it playable with vlc which is already an improvement. ifoedit tells me it is 16x9 and it looks like it too but gspot tells me it is 4:3 so i need to compare to the original

Sorry, didn't really work either (aspect ratio still 4:3). Did the
following (on Linux): demux vobs with ProjectX, remux with mplex, author
with DVDStyler and set the aspect ratio to 16:9 there.
