Millions pledged in tsunami benefit telethon
Thousands of people have flocked to a benefit concert for victims of the
Boxing Day tsunami at the Sydney Opera House and millions are thought to
have watched a telethon that has raised over $15 million in pledges.

The telethon was simultaneously broadcast by all the commercial networks, an
unprecedented collaboration, and also shown on the ABC's Asia-Pacific
Television in Indonesia, Thailand, India, Malaysia and other South-East
Asian nations.

Musicians who performed include Kasey Chambers, Missy Higgins, Killing
Heidi, The Disassociatives, Noiseworks, The Whitlams and Guy Sebastian.

The Wrights - a group consisting of members of Jet, Spiderbait, The Living
End, You Am I, Dallas Crane, Powderfinger and Grinspoon - also performed.

The 4,500 tickets for the concert sold out in less than an hour, raising
$112,500 for the World Vision charity.

Television personalities from all the commercial networks - including Rove
McManus, Eddie McGuire, Bert Newton, Gretel Killeen and Darryl Somers -
co-hosted the telethon.

Ratings figures were put on hold for the event.

Celebrities took calls in Melbourne to accept pledges for World Vision's
tsunami relief appeal.

The tsunamis have claimed more than 150,000 lives around the Indian Ocean.

Another benefit concert is reportedly planned for January 29 and will
feature Jet, Silverchair and the John Butler Trio and a reformed Midnight
Oil.
