Todd, you might also check out Steve Earle/Steve Earle & the Dukes if you haven't already. Early stuff was rarely overtly political, but from "El Corazon" ('96?) onward there's no shortage of it. Musically all over the map, R&R, folk, country, grunge, bluegrass, Tex-Mex. "Corazon" is probably as good as anywhere to start.
