I love Steve Earle.  While I agree with you about his concerts, I saw him a 
couple years ago and he played an extremely satisfying three hour show 
in which he played tons of his best stuff.  His new CD, "Jerusalem," comes
out Tuesday and includes the song "John Walker's Blues," which should 
create some controversey.
