  Subject: [Powderworks] Madison Show recap

I got back from my Wisconsin trip yesterday and I'm still basking in the glow of the Oils show Thursday night.

Tom Giffey and I got to the Barrymore a couple hours before the show started. Like David, we got to hear some of the soundcheck, albeit through the closed back door. (I didn't have the guts to sneak in - I didn't want to get kicked out before the show even started! But I think Indi and Adam made their way inside until the in-house security told them to leave...) We heard them do Brave Faces, Been Away Too Long and River Runs Red (though they didn't play this one).

Paul Black, the opener, played the shortest opening most of us had ever sat/stood through. A couple songs into his act, the Oils came in backstage and Martin watched Paul playing the blues for a couple of songs. Then Martin went downstairs and Bones watched for a while, while smoking a cigarrette.

It wasn't even dark out when the Oils came on stage. They openned with Bullroarer, which sounded a lot better than it did in Milwaukee. Actually, the whole concert was probably one of the best I've ever seen. Maybe it was our position next to the stage in front of Bones and Jim but it felt more like a private acoustic concert than the usual pounding hard rock. In fact, the whole concert was a total feast for the eyes and ears. I was almost too enraptured by the great music to dance like a maniacal fan as I usually do.

Jim started having guitar difficulties during Bullroarer so they had to improvise and play Renaissance Man second with Jim on keyboard. During the acoustic set, we got no less than SIX songs, including One Too Many Times!

Hearing the Oils play Mosquito March live showed how little justice the studio recording does for this song. After hearing them do this live, I think it might be my new favorite Capricornia song! It was amazingly awesome!

They closed with Sometimes. During the guitar solo, Peter purred like a cat and clacked like a bird which was pretty entertaining. Then we got two encores, the last of which was just Peter and Jim doing In The Valley with Jim on keyboard. During the song, Rob made his way on the stage (with just a tanktop this time for RHONDA, NINA & the other heterosexual female Workers...) and accompanied Peter for the last verse.

After the show, a whole bunch of us had After Show passes. The group of us must have been the whole Wisconsin delegation and one Texas delegate (me) from the Liquid 8 Street Team! There was a lot of joking around, and Oils tale-swapping. Finally the boys came out and signed autographs and took pictures with us. I told Peter I'd come all the way from Texas to see them, and he just shook his head agreeing that they'd been neglecting the Southern United States. All the guys commented on how great the audience was. EVERYONE was singing along during the well-known classics like BSM. Rob was really great and very impressed that Todd (Oilman) and I had Ghosties CD jackets for him to sign. He asked which songs we liked best, and also told us how hard it was for him to regain legal possession of all three albums. Also, apparently Rob has been dragging his wife and kid(s?) around on this tour with him.

All in all, it was a fantastic night. I wish I'd made a longer trip to catch their Chicago and Minneapolis shows but ending on a high note like the Madison show really made my trip.

I posted the few pictures I got from the Milwaukee and Madison shows at
  http://www.ma.utexas.edu/~judylai/oils.html

That's enough from me for now. Back to lurking mode.

  Judy

PS - ADAM, TODD & TOM: One of the pictures on my camera didn't come out. I did make reprints of the group shot of us with Rob so email me. Adam, your picture with Peter came out fine. See you up north again soon!
