G'day all,

Interesting idea ya have there Mike. Most Australians are proud of the =
multi-cultural diversity of our society so I thought I'd have a look at =
the 'stats' and see how we compared to the USA. The huge difference in =
the size of the populations will obviously have a bearing on how much of =
an impact each culture has and how much more secular each 'other nation' =
culture might be so your comment may have some truth to it, but the =
stats make for some interesting reading anyway. I've also only looked =
at foreign born not descendants of foreign born, if some one else wants =
to look at those it'd be excellent.

Basically the stats say that the total foreign born residents in the US =
is 10.4% of the entire population. The total number of foreign born =
residents in Austraia is 22% (most of those are on our Olympic and =
Commonwealth Games teams ;-)). Does that aid your theory with regard =
Sharon's email or just add an interesting complexity to the equation ;-)

They are sourced from the US Census Burea http://www.census.gov/ and the =
Australian Bureau of Statistics http://www.abs.gov.au/. Sorry there is =
more Australian content replicated below but all the US stuff is in PDF =
format rather than HTML so a bit harder to replicate. I've put links =
were appropriate.

USA

In 2000, 28.4 million foreign born resided in the United States, =
representing 10.4 percent of the total U.S. population. Among the =
foreign born, 51.0 percent were born in Latin America3, 25.5 percent =
were born in Asia, 15.3 percent were born in Europe, and the remaining =
8.1 percent were born in other regions of the world.

Australia

Birthplace=20

For the 2001 Census, 13,629,685 people (73%) stated they were =
Australian-born. This compares with 13,227,996 people (75%) in 1996 and =
12,719,726 (76%) in 1991. The number of people born overseas was =
4,105,444 (22%) compared with 3,907,993 (22%) in 1996 and 3,688,385 =
(22%) in 1991.=20

Of those born overseas, the three main countries of birth were United =
Kingdom 1,036,245 (5.5%), New Zealand 355,765 (1.9%), and Italy 218,718 =
(1.2%). The three main countries of birth in 1996 were United Kingdom =
1,072,562 (6.0%), New Zealand 291,388 (1.6%), and Italy 238,246 (1.3%) =
and in 1991 the three main countries of birth were United Kingdom =
1,107,337 (6.6%), New Zealand 264,123 (1.6%), and Italy 253,417 (1.5%).

The State or Territory in Australia with the highest percentage of =
people who were born overseas was Western Australia with 27%.

the fabric of society seems more disjointed and with more
gaps (I have a theory why, but it is a separate discussion). as a
result you really can't say that if you have characteristics A, B
and C then you are American. there are many ways to define American
and they are all equally valid. hence, I can't think of anyone who I
would call American, or who calls himself one.

I think one of the main reasons for this is because we are still =
largely a=20
country of immigrants. I live in Los Angeles, and believe it or not =
Spanish
is the most spoken language here. There is a huge population of =
Mexicans
in southern California who are trying to eke out a living because it =
has become
so difficult for them to do so in their native land. There are also =
many African-
Americans, Phillipinos, Japanese, Chinese, Samoans, Indians and many =
other ethnic groups in L. A. Other large cities in the U. S. have =
similarly large and diverse ethnic groups. What we lack in a truly =
"American" culture we more than make up
for in all the wonderful things that these various cultures contribute =
to our=20
  society.
