I’m going to bite at this one.
I have said many, many times to those around me that Midnight
Oil did “We’ve Gotta Get Out Of This Place” better than Elvis
Costello did, and I really think that. Here are some songs I can hear
them singing everytime I hear it by the original artist…
Silver and Gold – U2
The Hell Song – Sum 41
In The Air Tonight – Phil Collins (nix the keyboards
and have Rob slam his snare repeatedly during the verses!)
The Dolphin’s Cry – Live
The Last Day of Our Acquaintance – Sinead O’Connor
(alright, so this is a sappy love-torn song… I think it fits them
musically)
Punk Rock Girl – The Dead Kennedys (I wouldn’t
actually want to hear this, yet in my head I *can* hear it!)
Mercy Street or Biko – Peter Gabriel (for a
non-sappy slow song)
As you can tell, I’ve had a long time to think about
this. :o)
And for the record, I think The Chipmunks should cover “Progress”.
Back in the days of recording from tape-to-tape there was a “fast record”
setting which basically doubled the speed of the player/recorder. I was
making metal copies of some tapes for my car and had it sped up to chipmunk
speed when I found this song completely appropriate to them …if they were,
let’s say, singing about evading a cat. Okay, now I know you’ve
got to give it another listen to see if you could hear what I heard! The
cat message is lost in the second verse, but the first is spot on.

Ok, just a fun thought. This song played on the office radio just
now and I thought it would be red-hot if played ferociously and up-tempo by
Midnight Oil in "Redneck Wonderland" style ...
Any other suggestions of completely unexpected covers that would have worked?
Tina Cousins "Pray"
What
a miracle is life
the fields are high and the fruit is ripe
so hold out your hands
yeah, hold out your hands
and you're the same as me
you breathe the air I breathe
and we don't understand
yeah, we don't understand
And if you don't ask questions you won't know why
so say a prayer for the time while there's still
time
So pray for good and pray for love
pray for peace and pray it's enough
pray for salvation
pray that we're right
pray one day we'll open our eyes, and
pray for them and pray for us
pray one day we can live as one
pray for the children whose time is to come
just pray they forgive us for the stupid things
we've done
We all see the same sun
each day a golden praise is sung
to the wonder of man
yeah, to the wonder of man
and when we look why can't we see
all the riches that are free
oh we don't understand
yeah, we don't understand
pray for good and pray for love
pray for peace and pray it's enough
pray for salvation
pray that we're right
pray one day we'll open our eyes, and
pray for them and pray for us
pray one day we can live as one
pray for the children whose time is to come
just pray they forgive us for the stupid things
we've done
